Lanthanum tungsten electrode is a composite tungsten electrode material made of refractory metal tungsten as the main raw material and added with an appropriate amount of lanthanum oxide(La₂0₃). It is a versatile, non-radioactive TIG welding electrode and usually used to replace thoriated tungsten electrodes. This electrode material combines the characteristics of metallic tungsten and lanthanum oxide. Lanthanum trioxide has the lowest electron work function, the easiest arc starting, and the lowest tip temperature, which helps prevent grain growth and extend the service life of the electrode.
According to the doping amount of lanthanum oxide, the color code of the WLa tungsten electrode material is also different. For example, the color code of the 0.8-1.2% electrode (WL10) is black, and the color code of the 1.3-1.7% electrode (WL15) is golden yellow, and the color code of the 1.8-2.2% electrode (WL20) is sky blue.
Lanthanum tungsten electrode is mainly used for DC welding, but also has good results in AC welding.
Due to its good electrical conductivity and welding performance, tungsten-lanthanum electrodes have become one of the most popular electrode materials in the world, especially showing significant advantages in replacing radioactive thorium-tungsten electrodes.

Product Characteristics
Lanthanum Tungsten Electrode have many excellent characteristics as follows:
- High electron emission capability:
The doping of lanthanum significantly improves the electron work function, making the arc easier to ignite and more stable.
- High temperature resistance:
The melting point of WLa electrodes is as high as 3400°C, which is suitable for long-term high current operation.
- Low loss:
Compared with pure tungsten electrodes, the ablation rate is reduced by about 50%, extending the service life.
- Excellent conductivity:
The conductivity of WLa electrode is close to that of 2% thorium tungsten electrodes, with higher durable current and lower burnout rate.

It has lower electron work function, are easy to start arcs, and help improve welding efficiency
- Excellent mechanical properties:
It has good ductility, creep resistance and mechanical cutting properties, suitable for various welding scenarios.

Lanthanum tungsten electrode is mainly used for DC welding, and suitable for a variety of welding occasions:
- TIG welding:
Especially suitable for DC welding of stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium alloys.
- Pipeline welding:
When welding pipelines, welders are particularly satisfied with lanthanum tungsten electrodes because they have a long service life and can reduce downtime.
- Plasma cutting or spraying:
As a stable emission source of high-temperature plasma.
- Special metallurgy:
Such as semiconductor material melting, single crystal silicon growth and other high-temperature processes.
Product Production Flow
Lanthanum tungsten electrode is a tungsten electrode product made by adding rare earth lanthanum oxide (La2O3) to a tungsten base through powder metallurgy and rolling, grinding and polishing processes.
Lanthanated tungsten is sintered from extremely pure powders of tungsten and oxidized lanthanum using our efficient, high-yield, powder metallurgy method. There are 3 key stages in the process: pressing, sintering, and annealing. Exacting standards are applied at each stage. The tungsten and lanthanum powders must be at least 99.95% pure; they must be composited evenly and uniformly; pressing must occur at 160-200 MPa; hydrogen sintering is conducted for 6 hours at an operating temperature of 2300-2400℃. Adherence to precise component quality and processing standards yields finished lanthanated tungsten rods and sheets of very fine grain size, with no cracking, flaking, or deformation.

Compared With Other Tungsten Electrodes

The oxides added to tungsten increased the recrystallization temperature and, at the same time, promoted the emission level by lowering the electron work function of the tungsten electrode.
